Work package 5: Pilot study

List of partners involved

Lead partner DIfE and UCAM-CLGR, ISPO, BIOEF, UITo, EGPF, Imperial

This work package (WP5) is heading to test the selected best practise instruments and methodologies on measuring diet on study populations being currently participating in prospective cohort studies.

Description of the work

As a preparatory step the selected instruments and methodologies identified in WP 4 as the most suitable assessment methods to be used in epidemiological and public health studies across Europe in the future, will be translated into preliminary standard operating procedures (SOPs) by WP 6 taking the local situation in the centres into account. It is task of WP5, to establish local versions of the assessment methods for the participating centres using the preliminary SOPs. The pilot study will be conducted in 6 centres (Cambridge, Tromso, Estonia, Potsdam, San Sebastian, Florence) with different socio-cultural background. 80 subjects of the eligible local study population will be identified at random to be asked to participate in the pilot study. If non-participation, the reasons will be documented. All other participants will do the assessment of their diet with the new instruments and methodology. The data will be documented first locally according to a common scheme and then send to a data hub, which is the central data base of EPIC. The data hub manager processes the incoming data, performs quality control according to commonly agreed principles and returns the a copy of the overall data to each centre having participated at the pilot study. The members of the WP being mostly the PIs of the associated partners will agree on the type of analyses being performed by each partner and the publication strategy. The report will summarize the results of the pilot study in respect to participation, acceptance of instrument, missing information, data quality, and comparability of results.
